Pearl Abyss, the developer of popular online games such as Black Desert and EVE Online, recently held its Q4 2023 earnings call. The company reported a net profit of 15.6 billion Korean won ($12.1 million) for the year, a significant improvement from the loss of 41.1 billion Korean won ($35.6 million) in 2022. However, operating revenue decreased by 13.6% from 38.6 billion Korean won ($298.8 million) in 2022 to 33.4 billion Korean won ($255.5 million) in 2023.
Black Desert, one of Pearl Abyss' flagship titles, did not perform well in 2023. The IP generated 25.55 billion Korean won ($193.5 million) in revenue, a decrease of 13.8% compared to 2022's 29.3 billion Korean won ($227.3 million). Revenue for Black Desert also declined by 15.6% compared to the previous quarter.
On the other hand, EVE IP had a strong showing in the earnings call. The fourth quarter revenue for EVE IP increased by 24.3% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 1.99 billion Korean won ($15.1 million), an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year. However, the annual revenue for EVE IP remained relatively flat, with 7.3 billion Korean won ($55.9 million) in revenue, only 0.7% higher than the 7.25 billion Korean won ($56.3 million) in 2022. Considering currency fluctuations, EVE IP's revenue in USD decreased by 0.7%. Despite this, management mentioned EVE IP more frequently during the call due to the highest user numbers in five years.
Looking ahead, the outlook for Pearl Abyss' IPs is uncertain. While Black Desert PC may receive a license to enter the Chinese market, management also discussed porting Black Desert to next-generation gaming consoles. Black Desert is also planning to release its second update content and introduce a new PvP-focused event in Black Desert Online.
The development progress of Crimson Desert remains unclear. Although management stated that they are in the final stages of polishing the game, the only significant plan for 2024 is a large-scale marketing campaign in the second half of the year. It is estimated that Crimson Desert will likely not be released until 2025.
Regarding EVE IP, CCP London Studio is moving to a new location to provide more development space and reasonable operating expenses. CCP is also releasing a mobile game called EVE: Galaxy Conquest in 2024, which is currently undergoing localization testing.
Finally, blockchain game Project Awakening was briefly mentioned. Little is known about the game since it was announced last year, but CCP will reveal more details about the game in the first half of this year.
