Cherry Symphony (SMW Hack) (Longplay)
Mar 15, 2024
Hack: Cherry Symphony
Author: Fruit Composers
Fourth entry in the hackjam, this one is focused on music, and it was an absolute delight to play through with only a few minor drawbacks.
-Story
-Levels

As mentioned earlier, this hack revolves around music, with every level gimmick being centered around musical elements or concepts. Let's dive into each level:
Peachophone:
The first level of the hack, short and sweet. The peach siblings can be a bit tricky to manage, but nothing too difficult. I adore the music for this level; it has a charming, vintage feel to it.

Kiwitores:
This level surprised me with its Layer 2 mechanics. While it can be disorienting at times, I enjoyed the challenge and the creative use of Layer 2. The music track for this level is decent, not my favorite but still enjoyable.

Mystical Minuet:
Have you played Super Meat Boy before? If so, you'll recognize this gimmick that has been used in many hacks. This level features reversed gravity that flips every two "beats," forcing you to carefully observe your surroundings and navigate obstacles. It's a well-designed level, though some setups like the saw blades above the moving platforms didn't align perfectly for me. Overall, it's a solid level, and I love the music here, particularly the chiptune section towards the end.

Harmony Haze:
I have mixed feelings about this level. The gimmick involves Mario's position swapping left and right every two beats. While it's a good level conceptually, I found it frustrating and disorienting. However, that doesn't mean it's poorly designed – it just wasn't my cup of tea. The music track here is alright, neither something I particularly enjoy nor dislike.

Cocoa Crescendo:
The gimmick in this level is intriguing – you can only jump when the beat indicates it. This level serves as a great introduction to "Side B," and with a name like that, I was expecting more challenges in this half of the game. More on that later. This level is challenging, and there's one specific section I don't like: after the checkpoint, there are four hills you need to race against the beat. Due to my controller's malfunctioning down and right buttons, waiting for the right moment was excruciating, so I pressed "Fast forward" there. Sorry, but I'm not dealing with that nonsense. The music here is fantastic.

Oopsy-Daisy:
The second cave level of the hack, featuring an aggressive Layer 2 that moves faster and is deadlier than before. It can lead to janky situations, like getting sent under the foreground. The music here isn't really my taste.

Royal Rhapsody:
This level is a castle stage, and surprisingly, there's no gimmick here. It's a standard castle stage, and while it's well-designed, it didn't feel like "End Game" material. Instead, it felt more like it belonged in the "Side A" list. The music track is fine.

Fruit Frenzy:
And the final level, a boss battle with its own beat-based gimmick, throwing blocks every four beats. This was an excellent finale, not too hard or too easy.

In conclusion, this was undoubtedly one of my favorite entries in the event, despite a few annoyances. Next up is the one I consider my top choice.
